Public art commissions for artists

SEK 1.5 million is the fixed annual allocation for public art projects within the municipality. The funds can include selected construction projects, infrastructure projects and the design of the outdoor environment.

Project selection

Projects are selected on the basis of a sustainable and long-term perspective. Consideration is given to geographic distribution, the site’s importance, accessibility and user perspective. The Cultural Department seeks to implement projects whereby art ends up close to the community in the daily environment, which is an important democratic aspect.

An advisory group consisting of representatives from the Property Management Department, the Community Planning Department, the Works and Recreation Department, the Planning Department, and the Cultural Services Department will propose projects to be awarded funding for public art based on current investment projects in the municipality.

Selection of artists for the projects

SEK 50 000 – 300 000: The Art Department will suggest a suitable artist based on the expressions of interest submitted via the website. The artist will be selected by the Art Department together with representatives from the relevant activity, the Property Management Department and/or the Works and Recreation Department.

SEK 300,000 up to the limit for direct procurement: Based on the expressions of interest submitted via the website, the Art Department will suggest three artists, who will be commissioned to submit parallel paid proposals. A project-specific jury will select the artist.

Above the direct procurement limit: The project will be advertised in accordance with the Swedish Public Procurement Act. Based on the expressions of interest submitted, the Art Department will suggest three artists, who will be commissioned to submit parallel paid proposals. Assessment of the proposals

The proposals will be assessed based on the following aspects:

  • Aesthetic, artistic, gender issues
  • Interaction with the environment and architecture
  • Symbolic value for the activity / how it reinforces the activity’s identity
  • Choice of materials and technical solutions
  • User perspective
  • The artwork’s durability and associated solutions
  • Operational and maintenance aspects
  • Implementation
