Composting and garden waste

To minimize garden waste it should be dealt with properly to minimize any environmental impact. Garden waste includes twigs, branches, hedge cuttings, petals, leaves, moss etc. What can be grown to eat is known as household waste.
Composting in your garden is a fantastic way of dealing with garden waste. If you have too much waste it can be taken to the recycling plant. Other ways of dealing with garden waste include breaking it up into smaller bits using a garden shredder or putting onto a garden fire that’s strictly supervised. Check with the fire service before having a garden fire!
Garden waste is an important resource for improving the soil in our gardens. Instead of getting rid of valuable compostable material for combustion and then buying soil conditioner we can put it back into our gardens, thus completing the composting cycle. By composting garden waste we can create our own soil factory. We can compost in various ways: compost heap (with or without container), surface composting or by digging a pit.
In some areas HEM carries out garden rounds, meaning you collect your garden waste in special bins. HEM then travels around collecting them on a regular basis.
