Disability

Having a disability means that because of injury or illness you need help and support to live a ‘normal’ life and take an active role in society.

What is a disability?

A disability can be:
  • Level of intelligence (mental impairment)
  • Psychological (such as obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Neuro-psychiatric (such as ADHD, Aspergers syndrome)
  • Physical or medical (such as visual impairment, physical disability, severe epilepsy)

What help can I get?

Many different authorities and organizations can provide help and support to people with disabilities. You are entitled to some help by law, such as according to:
  • Hälso- och sjukvårdslagen (HSL) (Health Law)
  • Socialtjänstlagen (SoL) (Social Services Act)
  • Lagen om särskilt stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade (LSS) (Law about specific support and service for certain disabilities)

Examination of individual needs is sometimes carried out. Other support is only available by applying for it.

Many initiatives are only aimed at individuals with long-term disabilities.

The following headings provide information about some of the support available from the municipal council.

Where do I turn?
